Adventures in freakdom.

Congratulations are in order for three readers:
Jessica, for telling me that both the handsome fellows in that first picture were named John — Linnell and Flansburgh, to be exact. Hell, they might even be giants.
Carolisa, for telling me that Norman Cook of the Housemartins is currently livin’ large in the USA as Fatboy Slim.
Leigha, for telling me that Kerry O’Malley’s brother Mike plays Jimmy Hughes on Yes, Dear. While Mike O’Malley did star in his own sitcom (The Mike O’Malley Show) in 1999, it was cancelled after two episodes because it wasn’t popular.
Thanks to all who played.
I have found that by always stating that I eat a wide variety of mostly natural foods, I’ve become something of a Zelig (and how sad is it that I’ve never seen the movie, yet know the story? Obviously, I need to get out more) in the wide world of web site linking. The Weight Watchers people recommend me, because “he’s not on WW, but he eats like WW recommends.” The Atkins people link me, because “he’s not on Atkins, but he eats low carb like Atkins.” The South Beachers (who refer to their diet as SBD, something I’ll always associate with flatulence) discuss me on their message boards, and how similar what I eat is to what South Beach recommends. And finally, the Zone folks chat me up, because “what he eats is just like what we eat.”
Heh.
And now, for your enjoyment, pictures from Saturday’s hike. My path took me from the parking lot down the Alms House Trail to Three Caves, then up the Waterline Trail (my favorite trail so far — 9/10 of a mile, entirely uphill) to the Bluffline Trail and back to the parking lot. Total length: 5-ish miles.

About 1/10 of a mile in; looking down a streambed.

The obligatory picture from the bluff over Three Caves.
The little kid in the middle of the picture was a loud mofo.

Looking up part of the wonderful Waterline Trail.

The steepest part of the Waterline trail is next to this
bluff, which I imagine looks pretty cool after a good rain.

Looking down the Waterline Trail from the top of the bluff in
the picture above.

When I stopped for lunch (two peanut butter and honey sandwiches and
three clementines, if you’re curious), the points on this rock caught my eye.
I can only guess that water did that at some point long long ago.
You know, or aliens.

An assload of red-tailed hawks — seriously, like 8 — came to
check me out while I ate. Hawks are the shiznit.
The one in the picture was only about 30 feet above me.

A small part of the reason the Bluffline Trail is so aptly named.
There are some really big ones — 60 feet or more — further down
the trail, but I didn’t feel like getting the camera out then.

The Bluffline Trail was mighty pretty, dressed in yellows and reds.

The reason the Bluffline Trail was so pretty.

Looking toward Huntsville as I crossed the utility cut.

At the pavilion at the end of the Bluffline Trail, looking back over where
I’d been. There was a nice view here, but the pictures didn’t come out so well.
Happy Thanksgiving, and all that.

Pretty pictures! And I take it you took your backpack?
Yes indeed, I bought the backpack right before this hike.
And I still love it.
If you ever need a second job, you could surely become a photographer for a nature magazine. Beautiful photos of the hiking trail.
You sure that’s a red tail? Cuz the picture makes it look a lot like a Turkey Vulture… and you know, turkey… Thanksgiving, it’s the right season!
(could just be the pic though, since it’s hard to get pics of them birdies at times)
Doozer, while I’ll be the first to admit I know next to nothing about birds, I can definitely say that this one wasn’t a turkey vulture. The markings and head were all wrong.
You’re right about the pictures, though. It’s a hell of a lot easier to WATCH the birds than to get a good picture of them.
In any case, it might not have been a red-tail, but I’m pretty sure it was from the hawk family. The bird was a whole lot lighter than that picture shows (that was a digital zoom shot), reddish-brown on the top and a light tan with darker stripes underneath. It’s hard to see that in the pictures I got.
