I wish I could return to the time when life was so boring there wasn’t anything to write about.

You know, sometimes there’s just no easy way to write something. So, I apologize in advance for my characteristic bluntness, but this isn’t something about which I want to spin a drawn out story, because it doesn’t have a happy ending:

Tubby died yesterday morning.

The vet suspects his heart just couldn’t handle the strain of his weight — which pushed close to 25 pounds — coupled with the diabetes, and simply gave out. Robyn found him on her way to shower after her workout, and called me with the news. He was lying in his favorite spot, curled up in the cat bed next to the window where he could watch birds in the back yard and cars passing out on Busy Street.

He looked asleep.

It’s ironic, really. Six weeks or so ago we were agonizing over whether or not to put him to sleep because he peed everywhere. Then, his blood sugar finally regulated with two shots a day and we thought all was well.

Obviously, we thought wrong.

In retrospect it’s apparent that something was amiss with him. He rarely came downstairs any more, where before he spent more time down than up. He stopped bitching all the time, too, remaining silent except when the kitty treats were brought out. He had ringworm, like Spot, Stanley, and Miz Poo, but unlike them his wasn’t responding to the medicine.

I drove him to the vet’s office — “Windy” by The Association was playing on the radio, and I tried to whistle with it but couldn’t — and he confirmed what Robyn and I already knew. We’re having him cremated, and we’ll most likely put his ashes under the tree he liked to lay under in the back yard.

We miss you, little buddy.

    The Rainbow Bridge
    (For Tubby)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Oh, Fred and Robyn and Spud - I am so so sorry! Like all the others, I too felt like I “knew” Tubby through all your stories and pictures. I will miss him.

I also lost my fat cat, Lucky, in August. Unfortunately, she did not go as peacefully as Tubby. My 18 yr. old daughter and I took her to the Vet and were told she had to be put to sleep. It wasn’t pleasant. On the way home, both of us crying, I said to her, “we’ll have a glass of wine when we get home”. After about 3 minutes of sniffling silence, she said - “do we still have any of that blueberry juice left?” And I thought to myself, wow, she’d rather just have juice. Great! So I said, “yes, we do”. And she said “I think I’d rather have that with Vodka in it”.

Anyway, a light moment during a very sad time. My prayers are with you.
