"You know what’s weird?" Robyn asked. We were laying in bed after dinner one night in late December (but it was 2003, not 1963, even though it was a special time for me).

"What?"

"Diet Coke in the 2-liter bottles tastes better than Diet Coke in cans."

"That is weird. But it’s also true, now that you mention it."

"I wonder why that is?"

"I dunno. Why don’t you write them and ask?"

"You’re kidding, right?"

"No." I grinned. "They’ll probably send some coupons if you do."

"I’ll sound like an idiot," she said, "What kind of person would write and ask them something like that?"

The answer is obvious: me.

Hey! I am writing them now to see why Diet Caffeine Free Dr Pepper tastes better than their Diet Dr Pepper. I think it is the absence of caffeine from the artificial sweetener that makes the other bitter. But what the hell at least I will get a free 2 liter for asking! Hard times, I tell ya, hard times!

Had another thought. Why don’t they put the diet drinks in 3 liters anymore. I know they have never on the Diet Dr. Pepper. Light bulb! I will have my husband ask so we can get 2 free 2 liters. ;)

Diet Coke with Lime is liquid nirvana. I haven’t had a DC in over 4 years (quit caffeine and NutraSweet to have kids) but when this DC w/ Lime came out, I had to try it. God help me, I’m hooked.

I hate it when that happens.

Aly, I’m pretty partial to squeezing a lemon in my diet Coke when I have it. I tried the lemon diet Coke once, but it was just gross. Real lemons are the bomb.

I think I’ll write Breyer’s and ask why their premium ice cream tastes better than their lowfat. Maybe they’ll send me some coupons.;) Fred, I didn’t know Puzzledly was a word.

  6. Pauleene said:

Fred, you missed a golden opportunity, you could of mentioned while you were losing 171 pounds you drank diet coke, and become the next Jerrad (or whatever his name is from subway)

Oh well, I know you don’t bullshit anyone

  7. Elissa said:

Personally, I think the Diet Coke in 20 oz. plastic bottles taste the best of all. :)

  8. Debbie said:

Personally, I think it’s the carbonation . . . the Coke in the 2-liter bottles sure goes flat faster. Maybe I don’t drink it fast enough …

Did’ja ever notice that mini-Reese cups taste different (better, IMO) than the larger ones? It’s the ratio of chocolate to peanut butter. I’m partial to a larger chocolate ratio.

Hmmm . . . now maybe I need to write to the company that makes Reeses …

  9. Suzi said:

And I think the cans taste better than the bottles (2-liter or otherwise). I think I like the “tinny” taste.

  10. Stacey said:

Good score! Maybe I’ll start writing letters when I like something; usually I only write to a company if I have a bad experience.

A while back I was having an Uncle Ben’s frozen rice bowl dinner and found some shards of the plastic they make the bowls out of in my food. I wrote to them and got a coupon for a free one out of that.

Creepiest freebie-inducing problem I’ve ever heard of: Many years ago, my mom (before she quit smoking) bought a pack of her usual brand (Benson & Hedges, if memory serves), and opened it to find that it was chock-full of little bugs. She didn’t even bother to write them a lettter, packed it up, bugs and all, and mailed it off to them. They sent her a coupon for a free pack, but she was so grossed out that she never smoked that brand again, not even to take advantage of the free carton.

I read somewhere that (around here at least) different types of pop containers are processed in different cities. One plant will fill the 2 litres and one plant will fill the cans, for example, and then they ship them around the province.

The coke formula which is a teeny super concentrated pill is always the same but that the difference in taste is attributed to the difference in how the water tastes in different areas.

That makes sense to me at least. Hell, water in my own city tastes different from neighborhood to neighborhood.

I wonder if that could be a factor and Mr. Daft there just didn’t know it?

Don’t bother to write to Boca Burger. They won’t give you 2 cents. I like their burgers, but they are so expensive!

“shallow end of the gene pool”

Makes me wish I manufactured a product just so you’d write to me!

The question that I’ve always wanted to ask soda manufacturers?

“Why the %^&! does a 2 liter cost less than 20 oz. bottle?”

Seriously - the same store, 2-liter run 99 cents, yet a convenient 20 oz. runs $1.29. WTF?????

Think about that the next time you see a red-headed bubba sucking down a 2-liter. That would be me, and proud of my frugality.

Ummm, am I a traitor for liking Diet Pepsi better than any of the above?

  16. Robyn said:

Not a traitor, Elizabeth. It just means there’s something wrong with you. ;)

  17. Shannon said:

Most people that hate the lemon diet coke (but love a fresh lemon in diet coke) LOVE the new lime diet coke.It is sooooooo good! Fred..you & Robyn need to try it & post what you think!! It’s 2 for $1 on 20oz bottles most places so you’ll try it!!

    :o)

I must be the biggest cheap ass of all. I used to be hooked on Diet Coke, but I got tired of trying to find sales on it from week-to-week. I got myself to switch to WalMart’s brand of diet soda…and now I like it better! Only 50 cents per 2 liter, baby! Woo Hoo!

  19. Denise said:

    That rocks.

And ‘puzzledly’ isn’t a word. Think of it as a combination of ’sincerely’ and ‘puzzled’. :)

Wow… I knew you said things were slow these days but, DAMN! You and Robin need to get out more.

  22. Laurie said:

Just an FYI…it took me reading through all the comments then going BACK to the beginning of your post before I got the 1963 reference. Out of no where…it just popped into my head.

  23. Amanda said:

If you like the DC w/ Lime, you should definitly try to find the brand called “Havana Lime Cola.” They sell it at the Key Lime Store in Key West, Florida, and it is WAY BETTER. Btw, the Key Lime Store in Key West does have a web site, but I am a lazy f and I know y’all can google.

Oh what a night….late December back in 63…what a very special time for me…yada, yada yada. Damn Fred…that song is in my head now!

If anyone is interested…Starbucks gives out coupons when you write to them. Once I got caught in some paperwork loop and got EIGHT free drinks (any size). Woo-hoo baby. Then when I was fully addicted to caramel macchiatos, they cut me off…bastards!

Oh, and Purina also sends coupons. I called them because I thought their puppy treats had gone bad since the pup was hellishly sick after ingesting a couple. Sent me FOUR coupons.

I love free stuff. =) Thanks for sharing the tidbit ya’ll!

    R-O-B-Y-N.

    Still.

  26. CHARLENE said:

Think Diet Pepsi is better, but I also think the 20 oz bottles of either Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi are better than the cans or 2 liter bottles.
I also think that hte only soda that ever tasted good with lemon added was Pepsi Light, which is not for sale in NY, but I did see it year s ago in PA.
I think that if you like lemon, you need a real lemon, not Pledge.
Fred, look at all the free advertising you are giving to Coke. Better go get another coupon!

  27. Lori said:

I recently was put on a gluten free diet and I’ve e-mailed a number of companies requesting information about their products. All have responded within a couple of days and a few have even sent coupons! No complaints from me.

  28. Laura said:

I used to love diet coke and still do but since everytime I go to the dentist and get 9 cavities due to the acid in the pop, I’ve quit. :) It ain’t worth the pain!

  29. Silver said:

Hey nice job on snagging free Coke. Nothing better than that in my book… well, ‘cept maybe free chocolate. My sister (who I know reads both you and Robyn) works for Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Atlanta. I’ll shoot her an email and send her over.. maybe she has some more insight as to why the taste difference. Was it just me, or was Coke’s answer rather vauge? Oh, and I’m impatiently awaiting the arrival of Diet Coke with Lime in 12 packs here… only have it in 20oz so far.

  30. Dez said:

I hate Diet Coke- used to drink regular Coke all the time- now I’m a Diet Pepsi drinker. Hate regular Vanilla Coke, Diet Vanilla is pretty good. Haven’t seen Diet Coke with lime up here in Canada yet.

I’m a big fan of letter writing. I used to work for a major hotel chain and one of the things they drilled into us was that people frequently kept their complaints and compliments to themselves but that when they didn’t, companies took them seriously. I think the stats were something like for every person who verbally complains, five people stay silent; for every one that phones, 20 stay silent and for every one who writes, *50* have the same complaint. Handwritten letters have a greater impact than e-mail or typed letters- it’s an indication that it’s not a form letter that you send off for any complaint.
