Adventures in freakdom.
I think it’s about time to start an outside project.

Curing on the concrete.

The dark pile to the left was left by the previous owners.
The rest was done by me in fits of manliness.
We need a place to house all the wood I’ve cut and split. Time to build a shed. After all, I’m practically a carpenter now after building the cat house. How hard can a shed be, right? Saturday afternoon, we moved all the wood to the concrete pad in the back yard so no one will think it’s for sale, and we picked a spot for the shed. I guess now I need to figure out what all wood I need to do this.
There are a few general guidelines to follow when building a shed for wood storage:
They’re not hard and fast rules, or anything, but good principles to stick to.
This is very similar to the picture I have in my head for what I want to build, except I’m planning on setting the posts in concrete and making ours a little bigger. I’m waffling between a metal roof and shingles, and whether to pour a concrete pad or just put some 4×4s on concrete blocks. Other than that it’s a few posts, a couple of girders, some rafters, girts, and siding. Piece of cake (he says now).
I want to paint it, but Robyn says that screams “city people.” I’m pretty sure everyone in Smallville already knows.
If you live in the south, listen for cursing over the next couple of weeks as I try to (a) dig post holes with the tractor and (b) put six poles in the ground and get them square. I’m sure it’ll be fun.
The laundry room is done. It was the fastest yet (4 days), and probably looks the best so far.
I was a little concerned (as I think I said in a previous entry) with the color I picked, but I absolutely love it now that I see it on the walls. My inner interior decorator seems to be doing a good job at picking the colors.
But I guess it’s a given that I would think that, since I’m the one picking the colors, right?
We joke that we’re probably the only people in Smallville with crown molding in the laundry room, but heck, it’s cheap and pretty easy to put up (now), so why not? It certainly adds to a room, and makes it especially easy to slop the paint around because you know the line between the ceiling and wall will be covered up.
Anyway, that’s all I have to say, so I’ll shut up and show some pictures. Hopefully you’ll be able to tell which are before and which are after.

mmmmmm…very peachy! I like it!
Wow, Fred! That color is absolutely perfect! I look forward to reading about your progress with the woodshed. Thanks so much for sharing the results of all of your hard work.
You’re right, Fred, it’s a great color. And I like your idea about the woodshed. In addition to keeping the wood dry, it also means that you don’t have to worry so much about stacking everything perfectly so there’s less risk of toppling. Spiders and critters are a problem, woodshed or no.
lulu: Spiders and critters are a problem, woodshed or no.
Indeed - we talked about building the woodshed around that pad the concrete is on, but it’s ultimately going to be inside the fenced area where the kitties will be allowed, and the last thing we wanted was Mister Boogers dragging a rattlesnake from the woodpile into the house.
Great color, Fred, so bright and cheery for a laundry room! Will you please share the manufacturer/ name of the color?
Alice - if you’ll drop me an email to help remind me, I’ll try to remember to check when I’m out there. All I know right now is that it had the word ‘peachy’ in it.
OMG! Fred, it’s fabulous. Crown molding in the laundry room…what a concept. It looks so peachy-keen!
I love that color, very warm and cheery.
The thing that skeeves me out most about a woodpile is the wood roaches. Eeeeew, but there’s no avoiding them.
I love it! Also.. the glass knobs on the doors are beautiful, I am sure you will keep them in good shape, some people collect them. They remind me of when I was little, we had a house when I was growing up that had glass knobs..
Wow. I know I am repeating what everyone else just said but it really is the perfect color for that room. Love it! The crown molding really makes the room look extra snappy.
Fred, you did a great job. I love the peachy color. When you build the wood shed, spread lime on the ground underneath and throw mothballs over the inside. Snakes can’t stand to smell mothballs and they wont crawl over lime. It works here at my house.
Fred, we’re fixing up an older home for the first time, too, and I absolutely love hearing about it and seeing the pictures. Keep these entries comin. You’re doing an awesome job.
Ready Made (Magazine) has plans for a coolio shed - they say you can do it yourself for around $1500. Of course, you don’t need to put up the plexiglass but……

That color is just perfect. I wish I had such a beautiful room to do laundry in! I might actually get caught up on laundry if I did.
Nice!!!!!!!!! Love the color.
It’s amazing how much nicer a room looks with some fresh, bright paint. Love the color. Perfect for a laundry room. It’s going to look great when the sun shines in those beautiful windows.
Are you for hire, molding man? That looks fantastic. Also, this? “easy to slop the paint around because you know the line between the ceiling and wall will be covered up” is a GREAT point. That’s reason enough, right there.
Can’t say I’m a fan of the peach, but I love what y’all are doing to the house. It looks like a lot of work, but I know y’all are having a blast.
I have to say though, that you pick out a lot of pastel paint colors for a guy! I’ve liked most of them so far though.
Its absolutely gorgeous! I am living vicariously through you and Bitchypoo… we won’t be purchasing a home for atleast five more years, so I am all jealous!
I don’t know if you have addressed this before, but do you plan to install a mudroom? And the think the best opening for the shed would be to the northeast.
LURVE YA
Sammi
Lookind Good Fred……By the way…how goes the sale of your other house?
Sammi - We consider the laundry room to be the mudroom, too.
Dave - it’s not on the market yet; not till we’re done inside the new one and can start moving things.
