Adventures in freakdom.
We interrupt the regularly scheduled entry detailing Fred’s saga of the exploding pipe to bring you these photographs of the new Smallville floor. Our regular story will return next time on this same channel.

I had grandiose plans for a big portable chicken pen made of PVC and wire fencing. It was truly going to be a heartbreaking work of staggering genius. A feat of modern engineering.
Sadly, when I tested putting it together yesterday, it was a miserable failure, and I have to take it back to the drawing board.
As Robyn will attest, I’m obsessed with chickens right now. It’s almost time to start raising them, you know, and I need to get things ready. I’ve got a good idea of the coop I want to build, but just in case, I’ve got a couple of books coming tomorrow with plans, so I can see some other things.
We’re (okay, I’m) ordering four different kinds of chickens, so we can have white eggs, light brown eggs, dark brown eggs, and blue/green eggs. The chicken breeds (in color order) are: White Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, Cuckoo Marans, and Ameraucanas. Probably I’ll get two of each breed, no roosters. Tentatively, I’m going to go ahead and order four duckies (1 drake, 3 hens) at the same time, probably Rouens, which look like mallards but are bigger and don’t fly, but I may get a pair of Rouens and a pair of Pekins (AFLAC!).
I’m looking forward to seeing a big mess of multi-colored eggs in our fridge. And duck eggs.

upstairs hall, complete with noose?
Is that the attic access?
The floors look wonderful. I love your color choices.
1) I love that Spidey is hanging from Robyn’s light fixture.
2) The dining room is probably my favoriteist room with all that dark wood on the walls, plus the floor. Very masculine, yet cozy (and country!).
3) As good as your new house looks now, I cannot imagine how much better it’s going to be with quarter-round put down. Wow!
Oh, and 4) I seriously thought the hammer was floating before I read the caption. I had a moment of “how in the hell did he do that?!?” Gawd, I can be such a dumbass sometimes!
Fred…those kitchen cabinets look so good. I don’t recall you saying that you replaced or refinished them, although I do remember Robyn spent a good deal of time cleaning in the kitchen. Is their “updated” appearance the result of just a good old fashioned polishing?
BTW, I LOVE your house. I find myself anxious for you guys to move in. You’d think it was my new house.
lulu
Beautiful home!
Roseann - yep, attic. One of five (including the emergency one I had to cut when we found the roof was leaking by one of the fireplaces).
lulu - we didn’t do anything to the cabinets, we just made everything around them look better.
The noose is such a lovely addition to the hallway. And do I want to know how & why the hammer ended up on the pond?
The floors look SWEEEET! Looks like you’ll need to do a little touch-up on the baseboards from the stain, but I’m sure that’s no big deal for you. Great choice of colors!

Fred and Robyn - everything looks wonderful. I’d love to see a floorplan or even just simple explanation of how the rooms flow from one to the other. Also, maybe a pic of the entryway?
Again, you two did a fab job!
Now, I say, them are some mighty fine chicken breeds there, boy! I say, I say, mighty fine!
Sharon - see pic above. Any picture involving the front room pretty much shows the entryway.
Your home looks wonderful - I can’t believe how much work you two have put into it - and how quickly it was done! It’s truly a work of art.
Try out www.homesteadblogger.com/home.php these people have great info. The link takes you to what they call the Front Porch from there you can look up sites about chickens, goats, etc.
Wow–everything has come together so beautifully! You, Robyn, and the floor guy all did incredible work and should be proud. I love the colors in every room, though I think Robyn’s room is especially beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with us, I hope you’ll show more pictures after you move in and furnish the rooms. Great job!!!
Maybe its just an old wive’s tale I heard once, but I thought hens won’t lay eggs if there is no rooster. What do I know? =0)
the house looks wonderful
i wish we got cold enough winters over here to freeze ponds! (!!!)
i just realised what robyn’s room reminds me of (and possibly where you stole your ‘girly inspiration’ from?) - it’s just like one of the sims wallpapers! i’m sure of it!
Suzanne; I think the roosters are just necessary if you want baby chicks (fertilization); otherwise, eatin’ eggs aplenty.
Looks great!
The floors look great - well, everything looks great, but I especially like the floors…!
That sounds like a great list of chicken breeds - you’ll be all set up for eggs in no time!
Katy - good one with the Foghorn Leghorn response - I was thinking the same thing!
The Dave Eggers Memorial Chicken Pen? Hee!
I thought the house was great when you two first bought it, but wow. It’s absolutely beautiful now. You must be tickled with how well the floors turned out. They really set off the wall colors.
Fred-
A moveable chicken pen is called a chicken tractor (for real). That may be what you are looking for.
I also thought it was a noose - but just for a second!
I thought that rope was a noose, too, and thought you were making some weird statement
I love your house! And I can’t wait for the bird photos that are sure to be coming, especially all those different eggs.
