Adventures in freakdom.
It is finished.
Mostly.
I need to do some touch-up painting, and decide whether to paint the rafters or cap them and install soffits, but it’s close enough to done that I declare it so. I’m very proud that I built this by myself from the ground up over the last three months, starting with nothing more than a picture in my head and no drawn plans. Robyn put on the first coat of red paint, but everything else is Fred.
The shed has a door facing the garden, and a large (13×12-ish) area for garden tools and whatever else I want to put in it. There’s a set of double doors at the other end, so I can back the tractor in for loading and unloading implements into the 12×12-ish area for them.
I’ll spend today working on organizing my workshop, and maybe some stuff in the yard. My next project is a cat thing for Robyn, and then it’s time to start on the next big one: a bigger coop and fenced area for all the chickens coming next spring, or fencing the back forty and building a monitor-style barn to hold new chickens and possible cows, pigs, and/or goats.
I’m shooting for the barn, because I’m ready to build something with two floors now.

Late August. There is much testosterone in this picture.

Framed and roofed. Putting the end pieces of that roof on
was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done.

All shiny and pretty, with my softer side dictating an accent color.

Looking in the garden end door.

Another angle, showing tractor doors.

And looking in from there.

Looking towards the garden end.
And now, let’s kick it old school. If you’ve ever wondered how I like to sing songs, I do a lot of what these guys do.

Oooh Fred! I just had a vision of a barn raising with all of your readers that want to help showing up with their tool kits and that great music from “Witness” playing! Although I don’t have any particular building skills, I would drive down from IL to help Robyn feed the crew, help hold a ladder, and spend breaks with you singing old songs complete with dance movements!
Damn. I’m all impressed (and you know that means a lot considering it’s me and I’m talking about you - Hee!)
Awesome building. Lines look great, and the choice of paint color is awesome.
On a side note, a couple of weeks ago you linked to an Adam Ant video. Since then I have rediscovered my love for Adam Ant, and purchased one of his albums from itunes; I had it when I was in High School, and listened to it almost every day - “Strip”. Good times. Listening to him right now. Ahhh. (And it is totally your fault!)
I love The Dan Band! That was so awesome– made me smile today. And the barn? Most spectacular– I’m impressed, and can’t wait to see what you’re building next.
Wohoo, Fred!!! What a sense of accomplishment you have to have. You’ve built your self a beautiful shed!
Outstanding building Fred! Looks great! Looking forward to the next time we come down so that I can see it in person!
I am impressed. Great job!
Holy shit, Fred! You dun builded yerself a barn! It looks fantastic!
The Dan Band? Best re-do of “Total Eclipse” EVAR! “Fuckin’ total eclipse of da haaar.” Loved it.
The above remake made it into the movie Old School. I think Dan is married to Kathy Najimy.
Your shed is bigger than my house.
You’ve come a long way, baby!
Fred, the tool shed looks great!
I couldn’t tell from the picture, but if you haven’t already done it, you might put up some metal screening over the ventilation openings in your roof joists, unless you want to share your shed with wasps and bats. It’s a not a big issue this time of year, so you’d have some time. Similar issue beneath the floor …. screen or block off the area under the building. You may attract pests such as raccoons or skunks.
Great job. If/when we buy my husband’s grandmother’s house he claims he’s going to build a shed. We’ve been together for over 12 years and I’ve yet to see him build anything other then a small shelving unit to go under our TV. And that he had help with. I can only hope he does as well of a job as you have.
Great job Fred,it looks beautiful, only thing missing is a big beautiful Christmas wreath.
